What is the Legion of Mary?

The Legion of Mary is a lay apostolic association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the Church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of All Graces, serve the Church and their neighbour on a voluntary basis in about 170 countries.

There are 2 praesidia at St Elphege’s RC:

  1. The Seniors: Our Lady Queen of Apostles – in place continuously since the 1970’s. To be a member of the senior praesidium, you must be over 18 years old, able to commit to attend the weekly meetings and carry out legion work.

  • We meet on Tuesdays at 1:30 pm promptly in the Parish Hall
  • Our work consists of home to home visitation, visiting the sick and housebound, distribution of rosaries and miraculous medals, parish work as directed by the Parish priest and running the Junior praesidium; among other works.

 2. The Juniors: Our Lady of Fatima – current group in place since 2010’s. All children of all abilities are welcome; from the age of 7 years old. They too commit to attend the weekly meetings and complete their legion work.

  • We meet on Tuesday’s at 3:30pm promptly in the Parish Hall ( Rosary at 4:10pm)
  • Our work consists of knitting blankets for the elderly in hospital, mittens and hats for newborns at the hospital, engaging fully in parish life including preparing and saying the Prayers of the Faithful for some of the children’s masses; and annual visits to local care homes.

Can you contribute if you can’t attend meetings?

You can become an auxiliary member committed to the daily recitation of the Legion prayers including the 5 decades of the rosary. Your prayers are the “support structure” of the legion – a “praying army” committed and involved in the saving of souls.
